ABSTRACT

Fishing undoubtedly was and still is an important industry and major source of economic livelihood and protein for the peoples of Negara Brunei Darussalam. This chapter presents an overview of Brunei's fishing industry since independence and over the following three decades. It charts developments and progress in the fishing industry, provides a detailed overview of the domestic fishing industry, including the various government-driven programmes, and evaluates the country's high dependency on the importation of fishery resources, weaknesses of the local processing sector, and the marketing aspects of fishery resources.
