ABSTRACT

This chapter encompasses the suite of devices that enables potentially simultaneous access to multiple sources of information as well as multiple means of communication between the learners themselves as well as with other participants. The importance of learning design is to enable teaching and learning in mobile technological environment to remain the key outcome of participation in the program. The design for the program is informed by principles that emphasize the potential for technology to support learning within what has already been identified as constructivist paradigm. The concept of Community of Inquiry (COI) is a useful framework for exploring sustainability in learning with mobile devices since it contains dynamic elements that are needed to accommodate the shifting relationships between learners and teachers, particularly in programs that recur on annual basis with 'same' teachers, but new students and shifting technologies. It has generated substantial interest among online researchers as indicated in review of issues and future directions by Garrison and Arbaugh.
