ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the history, philosophy, implementation, and supporting evidence of the effectiveness of the Nurturing Parenting Programs in the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. For centuries, children have been the victims of parental cruelty and death. Child maltreatment can be treated and prevented. The abusive and neglecting experiences of childhood form the basis of our negative adapted self. Professionals and paraprofessionals with training in teaching low-risk parents and children-nurturing skills or professionals with a background in parent education, clinical social work, or clinical psychology are candidates to facilitate Nurturing Parenting Program classes. Two types of nurturing exist: positive and negative. The Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI-2) is an inventory designed to assess the parenting and childrearing attitudes of adult and adolescent parent and pre-parent populations. Longitudinal follow-up studies show very impressive data on the low rate of parents who are charged with repeated maltreatment.
