ABSTRACT

This chapter lists several types of online educational resources available to parents. Parenting is challenging, and parents have long sought helpful sources of assistance. Parents and parenting professionals both need effective skills for browsing and searching for sources of information and support on the Internet. Some parents are more confident of their Internet skills and more trusting of web-based information than others. The Internet and other new technologies also have created communication communities such as listservs, chat rooms, blogs, and social networking sites. These technologies allow people to meet, discuss ideas, and share their feelings in new ways. These findings suggest it is worthwhile to help parents learn how to find and use online parenting resources. There are two basic approaches to finding resources on the Internet: browsing or searching. The chapter concludes that not all online resources are reliable, trustworthy, and research-based. Therefore Parents and parenting professionals need to learn to judge the quality of Internet-based resources.
