ABSTRACT

One of the main editorial statements made by Philip Schofi eld in the new edition to Limits was to present the material unambiguously as the continuation of Chapter XVII of An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation , written and printed in 1780. Bentham’s hesitations to publish the contents as a chapter or as separate essays are well described in the editorial introduction. 1 Drafted straight after An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation was printed, the manuscripts for Limits were fi nally abandoned in the course of the following year. They were not included in the published version of An Introduction that came out in 1789.
