ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the American South by tracing the historiography of southern identity while investigating the history and culture of the geographic region. It explores the South as a way of life, investigating the cultural practices and traditions that have given the region its distinctive identity. The book traces the trends in Southern Studies to provide a state-of-the-field compilation of essays from leading and emerging specialists in the field. The History of the American South assists readers in developing an informed knowledge about the larger trends and specialty foci within the subfields. The book deals with the racial issues that continue to divide the region, among itself and among the rest of the nation. It illustrates the evolving nature of the South and identifies major historiographical trends and interpretations within the theme.
