ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the suite of ethical problems associated with geoengineering, or intentional attempts to engineer the climate back down to pre-industrial temperatures. It begins by setting the context of the geoengineering debate within the broader climate discussion. It then covers several technical distinctions that have been utilized to distinguish between various geoengineering strategies, addressing several alternative accounts. It proceeds from there to address the benefits, costs, and risks of geoengineering, but also to suggest that ethical, justice, and governance concerns are considerably thornier than often discussed.
