ABSTRACT
In this essay, I explore the connection between sentience, cognition, and moral status. To that end, I clarify the notion of moral status, explicate two of the most prominent philosophical views arguing for increased moral status for nonhuman animals, discuss recent empirical findings regarding animal sentience and cognition, and briefly look at one connection between animal sentience, cognition, moral status, and environmental ethics.
