ABSTRACT

The transportation sector poses major problems for ecology, particularly motorized transport such as cars, trucks, and airplanes. This chapter discusses the key environmental ethics in transportation planning and policy. It begins with an overview of key transportation terms, discusses the specific environmental problems, and, describes the ethical tensions in play in transportation policy and planning. “Transportation” covers many different concepts, but most policy and planning centers on passenger and freight travel. Passenger mobility involves transporting people to places they desire to go, including work and educational opportunities. Currently, global transportation activities consume about 61.5% of all the oil used each year on the planet; the largest share of that goes to passenger travel like cars.
