ABSTRACT

Some of you may already know that cystic fibrosis is a disease that results from a build-up of mucus in the lungs. Medical researchers believe it is caused by a genetic mutation most common among people of Scottish and European descent. Like cystic fibrosis, other health issues can affect specific groups of people. While medical researchers make new discoveries every day, one thing we know is that health results differ in populations. These differences can be due to a person’s health insurance status, access to high-quality health care and health literacy. But other factors that might not even seem related to health can play a role in inequality, such as different environments, cultural practices and education. Combine these factors with basic genetics and it is hard to figure out what is causing the problem.
