ABSTRACT

This chapter captures and visualizes cell movements, which we did through the development of new techniques and algorithmic tools. It devises fine-detailed ways of breaking down and measuring cell motility. The chapter visualizes cell motility in less traditional ways, including with 3-D printing. With the newly derived tools, even subtle moves made by the same cell when faced with different local environmental conditions could be revealed. In the videos we could relate observations to events and environmental conditions, leading to the discovery of multiple distinct cell behaviors within the context of the cells' surroundings. The battery of template cell motility signatures and the diagrammatic representations of cell behaviors can be reused. The concept of the cell motility signature can ultimately be leveraged in medical applications, as another means of obtaining cell-specific understandings of an individual patient. Various experimental methods are used to assess cell migration, including the transwell and scratch wound healing assays.
