ABSTRACT
This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part provides a broad analysis of the multidimensionality within the field of experiential education/learning that crosses a multitude of aspects of teaching and learning. It aims to the importance of place-responsiveness in outdoor studies, and its implications. The part highlights the importance of taking account of place when considering the events surrounding fatal and serious accidents involving participants on organised outdoor education events. It presents realist/empirical approach revealing actual events and their antecedents to highlight the rarity of such events and the pertinence of being fully knowledgeable and informed of the location and environmental conditions into which people and groups venture. The part discusses ecotourism from Canadian perspectives, focusing on Polar cruising expeditions and highlights the paradox of ecotourism in which the commercial enterprise attempts to promote environmental sensitivities.
