ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how to assess the relevant subject and curriculum areas, including statutory assessment requirements. In understanding the role of assessment in the classroom, it is important to consider its relationship with the two other major aspects of teaching and learning: curriculum and pedagogy. A fundamental principle in linking curriculum, pedagogy and assessment is alignment. Assessment of learning, also known as summative assessment, refers to identifying and recording pupils' levels of attainment, and is linked to those wider processes of monitoring and evaluation by the school or indeed at a national level. Assessment for learning, also known as formative assessment, refers to the ways in which teachers and others make judgements about pupils' work within ordinary classroom practices, and which are intended to aid the pupils in some way. The chapter introduces some of the main issues in addressing assessment in religious education (RE).
