ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights strategies that can help scholars of color successfully navigate the faculty interview process: finding supportive mentorship, teaching mentorship, knowing the stereotypes, and preparing to enter the job market. The transition from graduate student to prospective faculty member is filled with uncertainty and may produce anxiety. To ease some of this doubt, recognize that most faculty members have not gone through formal training regarding interviewing and hiring. The on-campus interview diverges from a traditional interview in that it is a medley of formal and informal interview situations. The first line on Fawn's Curriculum Vitae showed her surname, 'Montoya', her research focuses on Hispanics, and she had experience mentoring students of color. Fawn's first face-to-face interactions with potential colleagues occurred during conference interviews, which can be quite frustrating. After the conference interview, candidates then have to wait for the next round of interviews-if they hear from anyone at all.
