ABSTRACT

Negotiating seems like it is stressful because nobody wants to start a new job on the wrong foot. This stress may even be greater for women, people of color people who are not white, male heterosexuals. This chapter focuses on W's experience because it helps to frame some of the issues that are important for negotiating a job in academia, from practical concerns to issues of social identities such as race, ethnicity, and gender. It explores how gender can function during the process in ways that will be particularly important for female identified candidates to pay attention to. The response on social media to W's rescinded job offer largely focused on a critique of negotiating via email. The chapter discusses some of the general issues that W's email brings to light and provide suggestions for negotiating a job in academia that take into consideration some of the gender and race/ethnicity issues.
