ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters in the eight part of this book. The part of the book examines the semantics of plural and singular collective nouns in natural languages. Since formal semantics often takes the form of a regimentation of the natural language sentences, the main approaches to the semantics of plural and singular collective nouns mirror the approaches to the logical analysis of plural vocabulary. The part outlines a number of advantages for the event analysis of plural action sentences. The event analysis allows us to develop a singularist semantics by analyzing the plural subject as several agents of a single event. It presents two approaches to the logical analysis of sentences containing plural expressions. They are: the singularizing approach and pluralist approach.
