ABSTRACT

China-US cooperation on climate change and clean energy helps both countries to enhance their energy security and pursue a sustainable economic path that create jobs and promote economic recovery. In October 1978, American Energy Secretary James Schlesinger visited China to explore the possibility of bilateral cooperation in the construction of hydropower stations, renewable energy use and nuclear energy cooperation. Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke highlighted US-China clean energy cooperation on their joint trip to China in July 2009. Initiatives related to energy security, especially clean energy cooperation, can contribute to building the trust required for broader international cooperation between the US and China. If these two countries could further exchange and cooperate on some specific energy issues, it would be conducive not only to global energy security and sustainable development but also to the orderly adjustment of the China-US trade imbalance and the comprehensive development of Sino-American bilateral relations.
