ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the basic characteristics of a global justice system, setting out a vision for the international law that the author believes should be articulated, advanced and respected in order to achieve global sustainable development. There are several key crisis points which present future challenges for international law. The 1972 Stockholm Declaration on the Environment, with its 26 principles which offer a foundation for international environmental law, ought to be better known throughout the world. Foreign investment is one field in which much work is required to transform the current state of the law and international practice. The concept of sustainable development, which looks beyond the mere present into the long-term future and mitigates against maximum, immediate exploitation of common resources at the cost of poor countries, vulnerable groups and future generations, is acquiring a central place in international law. International law must reflect very strongly the need to develop, define and implement this concept.
