ABSTRACT

This chapter guides building-level and special education leaders in knowledge related to devising a cohesive and collaborative Common Core curriculum for general and special education teachers. Practitioners will be directed regarding the legalities of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), and ways they combine the two in order to develop standards for all children. The CCSS were developed in response to a growing need for accountability, transparency, and comprehensive educational reform at the state and national levels. The global economy now requires better preparation of American students to compete on an international scale. School leaders and instructional personnel are encouraged to adopt the following practices as it relates to educational planning for all children, regardless of disability category. Special and general education leaders alike can work collaboratively to implement CCSS. Implementation depends on strong collaborative teamwork, teamwork that is powerful and meaningful.
