ABSTRACT

The world’s Muslim population is expected to increase by about 35% in the next 20 years, rising from 1.6 billion in 2010 to 2.2 billion by 2030 (Pew Research Center, 2011). The Muslim population in the United States is growing even faster, conservatively now estimated at 6 million (Grossman, 2012). Muslim families immigrating to the U.S. can find the transition frustrating and isolating, especially as families move from more traditional societies in which religious and Islamic practices are an integral part of everyday life. Afridi (2003) highlighted the relative newness of Islam in the U.S. and noted that the community has only recently reached a critical size, beginning to form a collective Muslim American identity.
