ABSTRACT

African countries require industrialising in order to achieve fundamental transformations in relation to economic growth and development. Considering the central features of the industrialisation process, this chapter reflects on the beacons of a strategy that would lead the efforts to harness African-European Union (EU) development co-operation to promote and achieve tangible and competitive industrial transformation in both the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries and African Maghreb countries. The development of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) South-South Industrial Co-operation Programme and its specific realisation through the UCSSIC presents a viable platform of co-ordinated responses to the technological needs of Least Developed Countries (LDCs). It is an opportunity that can be used to harness the multilateral agenda for Africa's industrialisation. African countries should seek to exploit the option, in which case the EU countries as Africa's traditional partners may have a significant role to play.
