ABSTRACT

Idiosyncratic deals (i-deals) are "special terms of employment negotiated between individual workers and their employers". They are obtained through a bargaining process between the individual and the organization that leads to an explicit deal about specific elements of the employment relationship. This chapter explores the processes through which i-deals can help repair employment relationships damaged by the employer, and discusses how the content, initiator, timing, and history of i-deals may moderate these processes. It focuses on the characteristics of i-deals negotiation that moderate the relationship between i-deals and the reparation degree of the employment relationship. In the context of a damaged relationship, the individual may proactively ask for changes in the employment relationship. Empirical research shows that in the context of a damaged relationship marked by psychological contract violation or poor job satisfaction, employees might use voice as a constructive effort or tactic to restore the relationship.
