ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the place of the Old Fairground in its various stages in the context of the value of incorporating building memory and lieux de memoire into the plans for cultural sustainability of community and society. The multilayered symbolism and dissonant identity of the Old Fairground is to take a step backwards related to the narrative of industrial progress and modernity of a city. The new authorities and their Youth Brigades used the Old Fairground to help build the new city, the beginning of the development of New Belgrade within Serbia's post-war recovery, giving rise to new uses for this heritage place. There are multiple challenges for cultural heritage on the path from dissonance to resilience. Understanding the value and meaning of heritage requires interaction between people and between communities the sense of belonging and continuity for generations to come.
