ABSTRACT

The contributors came to this book from many different disciplinary or national contexts, bringing disparate experiences and cultural memories of both the past few decades and of events in earlier European history that have shaped present-day culture and social life. This book thus displays something of the shared problems and challenges that exist across Europe, and the similarities of changing approaches to them over the past century. Because the book was produced as part of a COST Action, most of the contributors were able to meet during the Action’s workshops to co-design the book, exchange views and compare their emerging case studies. This is not always the case with edited collections of papers, and we think the additional coherence and interconnectivity of the collection is visible.
