ABSTRACT
This chapter shows a few of the different points of view that can exist in relation to the city, heritage and remembering. Each one of them deals with the city whose memory binds, inspires, and gives the potential for the creation of personal, social and cultural identities. The chapter focuses on a particular community of participants, 'cultural actors', the professionals and artists who are most active in the city's cultural life, and who maintain, create, and produce culture. A number of cultural actors in Dubrovnik's cultural scene are part of official cultural policies, and depend for support on the Ministry of Culture and culture departments at the local level. Heritage is obviously an obligation and responsibility, but heritage also brings a lot of opportunities for local community development. According to this view, culturally sustainable development is considered to be a complex process of revitalisation, especially in historic cities, which promotes culture as the foundation of all policies.
