ABSTRACT

The history of Brazil has revealed the influence of the traditions of its constituent peoples: the white Portuguese, the Brazilian Indian and the black African among others. The consideration that is necessary to admit the existence of different cultures, including African, as something that is shared in common goes some way towards the recognition of the exclusive parts of the multicultural mix that is Brazil. The insertion of diversity, Gomes argues, involves understanding the political, economic and social causes of phenomena such as ethnocentrism, racism, sexism, homophobia and xenophobia. It can be observed that the black community has been ignored or portrayed in a negative or stereotypical way in fiction until the twenty-first century. Within the production of works for children and young readers, the treatments of ethnic-racial relations in the construction of characters are diverse in their approaches, as are the proposals for graphic-editorial projects.
