ABSTRACT

Since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy in 1978, China has been changing rapidly. This development has comprehensively influenced and changed the values and daily life of the people, and has also renewed the education model and maturation experiences of children from generation to generation. For eleven of the first twelve years of the twenty-first century, Chinese children's publishing enjoyed double-digit growth each year. The rate has gone beyond China's national economic growth rate and the whole Chinese publishing growth rate. The issue of the development of Chinese children expounded in Yang's realist fiction is actually a serious and wide-ranging topic. She is laying a basic groundwork for the mental health of Chinese children. The second stream of realist fiction, a counterpart of the realist style represented by Yang Hongying, tends to be more "realistic". Such works often focus on vulnerable children or children in special living conditions, and the mental health problems caused by these bad situations.
