ABSTRACT

Some of Kermani's subjects and themes are struggles with cultural and societal traditions, self-actualization and self-establishment, poverty, love, autonomy and attempts to be accepted by adult society. Ali Ashraf Darvishian before the Revolution, and Mohammad Reza Bayrami and Fereydon Amoozadeh Khalili after the Revolution were also concerned with similar themes in their fiction. Mohammad Reza Yusefi pioneered the introduction of mythical and epic themes through his creative retellings, and today he is followed by the young writer, Arman Arian. Besides poverty, epic, myth and war, love is yet another recurrent theme in Iranian young adult (YA) novels. Most war novels that take war as either central or peripheral also feature love; it is as if war and love is coterminous. Critical reflections on women and the feminine role as well as attempts to break gender stereotypes are among the most significant themes of enlightened YA novels in Iran..
