ABSTRACT

The study of women's leisure makes a contribution not only to feminist theory and the knowledge about the situation of women, but also towards a programme of social change. The consideration of women's leisure emphasises the importance of the women's movement slogan 'the personal is the political' by showing that there are individual as well as structural and ideological influences on what, where and how women experience leisure. The unfair treatment of women in schools has been extensively documented over the past few years by educational researchers and feminists. The second aspect of schooling relevant to women's future leisure is the teaching of sport and physical activities. As the most female dominated sector of education, adult education is a major source of leisure, retraining and providing new learning opportunities for women whose school education may have been far from adequate. There are many more women who are active in local politics as compared to national politics.
