Introduction Since the economic downturn of the 1990s, new social risks have emerged for young people in Japan. Given the dire state of the labour market, the media created buzzwords: furita (young people who work non-standard jobs, such as part-time or fi xed-term jobs and agency work), NEET (not in education, employment, or training), the working poor (workers whose income falls below the poverty line), netto café nanmin (those who take refuge in cybercafés after losing their jobs or getting evicted), and the young homeless . Although the media often seem to sensationalize youth issues, they do shed light on the real disadvantages affecting today’s youth and direct public attention to young people’s well-being.
