ABSTRACT

How do we measure the impact of communication interventions? This chapter explores how media monitoring and evaluation (M&E) promotes peace in nations emerging from conflict. The chapter explores both theoretical and methodological issues underpinning monitoring and evaluation of media. It reviews the assumptions guiding monitoring and evaluation, and positions M&E as having an important organizational decision-making function. The chapter outlines ways that social science-based methods have helped donors of media and information interventions to better serve peace and reconciliation. The final section reflects on the author’s experiences and identifies ways forward for media interventions in post-conflict nations.
