ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the techniques of official forgetting and oblivion, utilized by the state and its various apparatuses in the aftermath of state-sanctioned violence. This chapter also shows how state-suppressed historical memories can be maintained and recovered despite official attempts to remove them. Finally, this chapter demonstrates how the manner in which language is used can have a significant impact on the framing of these historical memories and the degree to which they can be utilized for forging peace, justice and understanding rather than division, hatred and more violence.
