ABSTRACT

This chapter specifically deals with the relationship between caste, communication and conflict. It responds to the question “how does one understand communication for peace in contexts characterized by social hierarchies and traditional markers of identity, such as caste, that are deeply rooted and impervious to change?” It highlights the specific case of Khabar Lhariya – a newspaper run mainly by impoverished Dalit women – as an example of peacemaking in process in the context of a permanent contestation. The chapter also deals with the Right to Information Movement in India, and in particular the role of public hearings in the validation of voice.
