ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how Pax Americana depends on global media and information hegemony, and assesses the implications for the success of “alternative” media from within and beyond the empire, including online initiatives (e.g., Al Jazeera, Telesur, RT and CCTV). It demonstrates the continuing exercise of US power through media, and offers examples of often-flawed resistance or attempted redress. Despite growing interest in systemic analyses of the causes of media collusion with power in times of conflict it is also advisable to sustain a focus on agency and method. Media coverage of US relations with Iran is a case in point.
