ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the reactions of European policy makers and employers to the ageing workforce and increased age diversity. It examines the nature and implications of ageing workforce demographics across Europe. The chapter explores the organizational responses to the ageing workforce, before presenting conclusions and learning points. It focuses on both national and organizational reactions to population ageing, specifically focusing on the case studies of the UK and Germany. The chapter presents employer practices across Europe and their human resource management (HRM) approaches towards their ageing workforces, before providing a brief comparison of the situation in the UK and Germany. Employers are also investing in workplace redesign to support workers young and old with long-term health conditions (LHC). The Finnish approach of workability has also provided a useful framework in which to assess and manage older workers abilities.
