ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the particularity of global careers in the European context, characterized by a unique configuration of historical, political, economic and demographic factors. It investigates the main challenges faced by multinational enterprise (MNE) who manage global careerists, such as successfully managing repatriation. The chapter examines different kinds of considerations that come into play when individuals embark on a global career. It explores that European global careerists value developmental and career considerations more highly than performance and reward implications at the point of the decision to work abroad. It indicates that in the unique European context, organizations have a multitude of strategic and operational options to shape, influence and utilize the effects of global careers. The chapter presents a crucial condition would be that the acquired career capital is useful in the current job and can be transferred to a new location and new job.
