ABSTRACT

In the previous two editions of this book we reviewed the contemporary issues in IHRM in Europe (Brewster and Harris, 1999; Dickmann et al., 2008). The series falls within a long tradition of writing through which we, with various colleagues, have addressed the specific question of the existence of a ‘European model’ of HRM. Not long after the creation of the Single European Market back in 1992, there was a debate about the level of transition that might be expected within HRM across Europe. Throughout the 1990s, a series of contributions laid out the contours of a European perspective (Brewster et al., 1992; Brewster and Larsen, 1992; Brewster, 1993, 1995; Sparrow and Hiltrop, 1994, 1997; Brewster and Hegewisch, 1994).
