ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that there is a Nordic resilience tradition which is anchored in the institutional contexts and reinforced by Human Resource Management (HRM) practices focused on individual development. It focuses on a region of geographical and historical proximity, with similarities in institutional set-up and developments. The chapter presents a background including the economic development, followed by some facts about the Nordic HRM institutions. It focuses on how collective aspects of working life can cooperate with individual HRM measures and thereby support resilience. In particular, the focus on HR being part of the top management group where product market strategies and HR strategies are formulated and aligned as a consequence of organizational changes is continuously taking place. The Nordic use of a high level of co-determination is also based on a tradition and culture that encourages flat organizations with few hierarchical levels.
