ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the different modes of coping with loneliness. It explores the coping strategies, such as the family and school, and considers intervention trends aimed at empowering one's personal resources and activating resilient approaches to coping with loneliness. The chapter reviews the research on loneliness in and adolescents. It focuses on the conceptual models of coping during childhood and adolescence. In a review of coping research across childhood and adolescence, developmental patterns were scrutinized using the coping behaviors. The chapter explains the self-help intervention-mindfulness meditation-may prove to be an effective practice for helping children and adolescents deal with loneliness. It reviews the concept of loneliness and the cognitive and emotional mechanisms involved in coping successfully with the effects of loneliness. The chapter focuses on the conceptual and empirical research about how children and adolescents cope with a distressful experience, loneliness, in hopes of extending people understanding of resilience, adjustment, and well-being in the face of the stressor.
