ABSTRACT

My interest in understanding learning from a developmental perspective attracted me in turn to the sequence of behavioral changes that unfolds during a rat’s progression from birth to weaning. At the conclusion of the second postnatal week, rats display behavioral changes that rapidly bring them to a weanling state of maturity. The eyes open and become functional at this time, feeding on solid foods is noted, and adult forms of locomotion are also seen (Altman & Sudarshan, 1975; Babicky, Parizek, Ostadalova, & Kolar, 1973; Galef & Clark, 1972).
