ABSTRACT

This seems an appropriate occasion for me to try to evaluate the current status of dual-coding theory. First, I review some relevant developments in imagery research and dual-coding theory since the publication of Imagery and verbal processes in 1971. I then assess the explanatory and heuristic value of the theory by summarizing the critical findings that have been predicted or explained by it, as well as those observations that are problematic for the theory. Finally, I identify some of the directions that theoretical development should take in light of the current factual knowledge in the area.
