ABSTRACT

The primary focus of this chapter concerns the nature of semantic representation and its relation to memory. Looking back over my graduate-student years, it is clear that the seeds of my curiosity concerning semantic representation and memory were long ago germinated and well cultivated by coffee-punctuated discussions with Allan Paivio, in whose honor this symposium was held. I remember on one occasion walking down the halls of Middlesex College with Allan when he mentioned that he had been exploring the notion of meaning as imagery. My response was neither as opportune nor thoughtful as it might have been, and I remember the resultant look of surprise on Allan’s face.
