ABSTRACT

The author addresses the issues related to the institutional research ethics in narrative research, practical and relational issues and; ethics of care in relational and fluid inquiry. She discusses a range of ethical issues and tensions in the study of education at the intersection of cultural boundaries. The author found herself crossing boundaries by being expected to assume roles that would be defined in the Canadian school system as jobs for social workers, counsellors, teachers, translators and other professional resource persons. Her narrative inquiry into newcomer families in search of home in Canada landscapes in transition is a three-year intensive study at Bay Street Community School. When she first started her negotiation of entry into Bay Street Community School, she was located at the Parent Centre as a research assistant of the larger school-based project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
