ABSTRACT

When lecturing to architects in global centers of culture such as London, New York, Sydney and San Francisco—places where I expect to see audience members wearing a lot of black and dark gray clothing—I’ve learned that it’s best to show a few images of modern buildings that exhibit characteristics of good urbanism right up front to address the question of style. If I don’t make that point at the beginning of my presentation, I know it will surely be an unstated challenge to all of my subsequent remarks about the New Urbanism.
