ABSTRACT

Today’s architects and designers are challenged to develop designs that reflect the attitudes and needs of our dense, urban, heterogeneous and rapidly changing global society. An understanding of diversity embodies a sense of inclusion and mutual respect, empowering all in the environment to feel and be treated as equals. A transformative model of diversity emphasizes understandings of each person’s own views of the world, and requires design professionals to look beyond personal viewpoints to understand and engender empathy for the lives, experiences, and viewpoints of others. Diversity in design, designers, and clients, is a mandate for professional success.
