ABSTRACT

Even today’s self-appointed defenders of the liberal arts often lack clarity about what a liberal arts education is and what it means. Especially in a time when, as we all recognize, the liberal arts are being challenged from almost every conceivable corner, those of us who know the immeasurable and irreplaceable value of liberal education need to give a better account. To do this, we might begin by looking back to the question of what kind of education is needed to preserve and support human liberty. We must also be attuned to growing inequalities when it comes to liberal arts education.
