ABSTRACT

The journey toward expert performance in sport is long and complicated, with many variables impacting the final outcomes. This chapter discusses the interested in the secondary factor of the use of observation by coaches and officials for their personal development along the pathways to expertise. The career pathway to becoming an expert coach or official has been shown to include a variety of sources of knowledge. Beginning with the coaching literature, a number of researchers have interviewed experienced coaches to learn of their developmental experiences as they advanced to expert levels. Knowing that coach development occurs during an extended time frame, one can question who it is coaches are observing and how this can impact their development. The how component refers to such factors as the frequency of observation, the viewing angle one assumes, and the viewing speed one implements when watching a model on video.
