ABSTRACT

The best way to appreciate the intricacies of notational analysis is to examine systems for sports. This chapter presents a number of examples of different systems for different sports. It provides examples for individual sports, and team games. The chapter discusses notation systems for tennis, boxing, basketball, soccer and netball. It also presents a motion analysis of work-rate in different positional roles in field hockey, investigating the overall movement patterns of elite male field hockey players. The recording sheet contains descriptive details of the match or practice session so that the information obtained is available for analysis, and future reference. It consists of vertical columns with the headings of red and blue referring the team colours. Several factors can be analysed without a great deal of effort. By evaluating important and effective aspects of competition, the adoption of a rational and systematic approach to improving performance and reducing the unpredictability of a team can be applied to coaching practices.
