ABSTRACT

Notational analysis of the coaching process promotes the objective assessment of behaviour and provide insight into variables deemed important in determining effectiveness. This systematic process provides valid and reliable information that can accurately describe coaching behaviour, and advances in computer/device and audio-visual technology that enhances the efficiencies of data acquisition, analysis and feedback. Research into coaching effectiveness must continue with attempts to analyse, describe and modify a variety of coaching behaviours, building on its initial teacher effectiveness framework, where teaching skills were viewed as a science. The aspects of coaching behaviour are examined by interpretive and semi-structured interviews. The development of Coach Analysis and Intervention System (CAIS). was based the systematic observation providing descriptive baseline data of actual coaching behaviours. Another area of under-researched work was the Coaching Behaviour Assessment System (CBAS). While coaching behaviour remains the most studied aspect of sports coaching, there exists a great deal of scope for further work in this area.
