ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book investigates the implications of a 'landscapes of practice' perspective in more detail. It explains the boundary encounters between different practices can be important opportunities for learning but also bring significant challenges. The book and the workshop had their origins in a conversation about learning between Etienne Wenger and the Practice Based Professional Learning Centre at the Open University, in the UK. The workshop, held in Milton Keynes, England, brought together practitioners, researchers, Higher Education teachers and regulators from a variety of different fields to explore 'landscapes of professional practice'. It shares some of the stories and role plays crafted by the groups. The book helps to reflect on the changing nature of higher education and professional development. It illustrates how exploring different practices in the landscape can be important opportunities for learning.
